ABOUT THE PROJECT

The University of Canberra Health Research Institute and Data61 are undertaking the first ACT-wide study involving Fitbit(tm) Activity Tracker users to create a detailed picture of health and physical activity levels of Canberrans. Researchers will study how data from activity trackers can help identify lifestyle behavioural risk-factors for the prevention of chronic disease e.g. type 2 diabetes, heart disease. Using data from activity trackers and wearable devices, we can aggregate de-identified data into groups and sub-populations and examine how your work, home and neighbourhood environment can have impact on your physical activity levels. Findings from the project will be used to inform future city planning for Canberra so we can live in a city which encourages and enables physical activity for all.

PARTICIPANT INFORMATION

How do I join?

Joining the project is simple. Just complete the registration at https://activecommunity.com.au/ and follow the directions to connect your FitBit™ account to the project.

What do I get for participating?

In addition to being involved in a project to help create a more active friendly city, you can sign up to the “MyHealth” option which will give you a health report card on lifestyle risk that you can take to your GP or health practitioner to provide them with extra information about you. Location based activity information will also be available to give Canberrans a glimpse of the activity levels in their own suburbs, and to compare yourself with those living close-by or in other suburbs across the ACT; an insight which may inspire community commitments to improve their activity levels. You can also opt to receive information about local health-related events in your area, find out where the most popular places people in Canberra like to walk or cycle, and to find out how ‘walkable’ your neighbourhood really is.

Participants signing on can also enter the draw to win a new Fitbit(tm) Surge, valued at about $350.00

This project has been approved by the University of Canberra’s Human Research Ethics Committee, HREC 16-104.
